TRAIN SERVICE TO PETONE

ALTERATIONS DESIRED. THE MINISTER’S OPINION. The railway service to Petone was a subject that was considered by the Petone Borough Council last evening.

The Minister for Railways wrote stating, regarding Sunday trains, that passengers north of Lower Hutt preferred that no alteration should bo made in the present departure time of the 8.50 a.m. train from Upper Hutt. Passengers from the Hutt line were able to get to Plimmerton by tho 2 p.m. train if they so desired, and he was of opinion that any alteration in tho departure time of the 8.44 p.m. train from Wellington and the 8.48 p.m. train from Petone would meet with disapprobation from the general users of the train. Ho regretted, therefore, that tho existing arrangements could not bo disturbed.

Regarding the Wairarapa train, the Minister stated that Petone was already very well served by the present services, and intending passengers should have no difficulty in oroceeding to Lower Hutt, which was tittle over a mile distant, in order to join the train for Wairarapa. IF additional stops were made tho department would immediately bo inundated with complaints from long-distance passengers. After giving the matter careful consideration. he regretted that no alteration could be made.

The Mayor said they were disappointed in not getting tho Wairarapa train stopped at Petone ■ under the Ward Government, and now it did not look as if they would succeed tender the Massey Government. Councillor Short: Write to the Minister and tell him his reply is unfavourable.

The Mayor suggested that the mttier should bo left to him and the town clerk to interview tho Minister, and this was agreed to.
