EASTER CARNIVAL

EXECUTIVE MEETS.

ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND

Further arrangements in connection with the Citizens’ Easter Carnival were completed at a meeting of the general executive at tho Town Hall last night. Fifteen members were present. The .Mayor, Mr D. McLaren, presided. It was decided to hold a carnival on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday, March 22nd and 24th, at Newtown Park. Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Liverpool are to be asked to extend their patronage to tho carnival, and also to attend it if possible. Arrangement of the opening ceremonies was left in the hands of the Mayor. Ministers of the Crown and Supreme Court judges who may be in Wellington at Easter will be invited to attend.

It was reported that so far voluntary subscriptions totalling nearly £2OO had been received, and that there were numerous promises to come in. Reports received from tho various sub-committees indicated that each was busily engaged upon its particular section, and that good progress was being made. It was stated that the principal stall-holders had received numerous offers of assistance, but that the help of many more young ladies would bo welcomed. The chairman intimated that he had written to the proprietors of the various picture theatres in the city asking them each to give a benefit_ night in their respective houses in aid of the carnival funds. A committee to attend to the recep tion of carnival visitors was set up. Tho chairman was authorised to communicate with tho Wellington Industrial Association, tho Chamber of Commerce, and the Trades and Labour Council seeking their co-operation in this branch of the work. Tho concert and entertainment committee was requested to arrange for a big spectacular display of fireworks for one evening of the carnival.

It was decided to communicate with the heads of tho Boy Scout movement enlisting their aid. It was mentioned that arrangements were being made to hold a swimming carnival at Te Aro Baths on either tho Wednesday or the Saturday following the Easter Carnival proper.
