WITH THE RIFLE

SATURDAY AFTERNOON'S EVKJSTS. SOME GOOD SCOEING. Saturday was a good day for shooting at Trentham. A steady right wind blew across the range, and marksmen were able generally to get' the hang of it. Following are accounts of the events: KARORI CLUB. The Karori Club fired the third match of its second series competition for trophies donated by Messrs L. Blundell, Owen Daly. W. J. Blundell, W. Judd, and H. Coker. The match was fired over short ranges, 1Q shots at 300 and 500 yards. Kifleman V. W. Ohing again shot brilliantly, putting up the tine score of *i out of the possible 100. The next highest score was 92, registered by Kifleman J. <J. Low, who finished strongly at tihe last range with a score of 49—one point short of the possible. Low's score gives him a lead in the club's championship of two points from President Marshall. With only two more matches to he fired, the competition stands at a very interesting stage. The three leading scores are separated by a margin of only six points, and as the leading competitors are three of the most consistent shots of the club, the result is being watched with considerable interest.

The following are the individual scores of the club’s No. 1 team which won the championship shield at the Manawatu rifle meeting held at Palmerston North on Wednesday last. The shield—a very handsome one presented to the association by Mr S. Greer, of Palmerston—has now been competed for on five occasions. In the first year of competition it was won by the Linton Rifle Club, which lost it in the following year to the redoubtable Opaki Club. Up till the recent meeting the latter club managed to successfully defend their title. The score of the Karori Club’s team is interesting in the remarkable consistency of the shooting of its individual members—only two points separating the scores of the five men comprising the team. The average score for each man is jnst on 4J points per shot, and the total is one point higher than the previous best score of the successful team.
