BOWLING

Although there was a blustering southerly wind early on Saturday, with some rain, it died down before the time came to make a start with the various games, and with the sun shining from a cloudless sky, bowlers had a faultless afternoon for their favourite pastime. The principal event was the opening of the new green at Seatoun. A number of the city and suburban clubs sent rinks, there being quite a number of visiting bowlers and friends present. One and all were delighted with the now green, which later on should play exceedingly well. With plenty of sunshine, warmhearted hosts, and some good games bowlers from the city greatly enjoyed the outing, and many were the (mod wishes expressed for the success of Wellington’s latest recruit in the bowling world, the Seatoun Bowling dnb. COMPLIMENTARY REFERENCE TO MANAGEMENT. WEAK RINKS CRITICISED. CHRISTCHURCH, Jannary 25. A reporter who spoke to several of the visitors learned that the management of the tournament had met with approval on all hands. Reference was made to the work of the local officials, whose energy and organisation had resulted in the tournament being carried out smoothly. There had been no complaints from any quarter as to the management of the tournament. Though general satisfaction was expressed with the management of the tournament, some howlers protested against the “section" system, principally on the ground that, in their opinion, it led to pointing. One feature that came under the notice of the Northern bowlers was the number of narrow bowls need here, which they averred just managed to come within the standard. A fact which some bowlers adversely commented upon was that a weak' rink very often did not try to lower the colours of a crack rink. This led to many- of.

comfy . not taking the tournament so seriously as they should do. This fact became most obvious where two rinks were engaged in which the players of one rink were friends of the players in the other rink. There was a glorious uncertainty in bowling as well as in crickec and other games, and if only the weak rinks would not go on the green with the conviction that they must be beaten,- but would instead have a sporting ‘‘go*' for a win, the result might in many cases considerably surprise them. The visiting bowlers interviewed by pressman were delighted with the excellent camaraderie which, they stated, had existed amongst competitors throughout the tournament, and this, together with the delightful weather experienced the past week, will enable them to take sway many pleasant recollections and a keen desire to visit Christchurch for a bowling tournament once again.
