MARTON RESERVOIR

REPAIRS TO BE EFFECTED BY DAY LABOUR. Special to the “Times.” WANGANUI, January 28 It will be remembered that several months ago the newly constructed dam at Barton burst, and that the engineer, "Mr Laing-Meason, in a report to the Borough Council, estimated the cost of the repairs at from .£6OO to JB7OO. The council, with a view to having this confirmed, obtained the services of Mr Munro Wilson, of Auckland. He practically condemned the system under which the dam was constructed, and he considered that the reservoir could not be made permanently secure under an expenditure of about .£4OOO. The council, at the request of Marton residents, decided to get still further advice, and the services of Mr J. H. Maxwell, of Wellington, were requisitioned. Mr Maxwell visited the damaged works on rTiday, and he reported to the Borough Council yesterday that he considered the dam faithfully built and in strict accordance with the Indian system. He recommended the work to proceed as suggested by Mr Laing-Meason with a couple of minor variations. Tne report was adopted, and it was decided to proceed with the repairs at once, the work to be done by day labour.
