THE HAWEEA. -The South Taranaki Shipping Company’s coastal steamer Hawera, which went ashore at Fatea several months ago, has now been hauled well up the beach above high water lino, and a staff of men, controlled by Mr Brown, shipbuilder, of Auckland, are now engaged effecting repairs. The damage is not nearly bo extensive as was at first anticipated. Thanks to her.sturdy build, the little coaster is practically undamaged, except at the stem and side, where she struck on the angular rocks. The hull and stern, including rudder and, propeller, are as good as the day they left the shipbuilder’s yard. A remarkable feature of the damage is that though tho rout in the side looks as if the boat were badly damaged not a plank is started, except where the rocks actually touched. Given fine weather repairs should be completed in about six weeks' time, when the work of relaunching will be taken in hand. This will be carried out in a simple bat effective manner by raising tho vessel, which weighs at present from 160 to 180 tons, above the breakwater and then allowing her to slide gently down into the river. TO IMPROVE FATEA. The Patea Harbour Board has received a report from the Marine Department with reference to the dredging of the river and improving the port, says the press. The whole position was discussed, and the engineer shewed that unless the board could go into a loan of say .£45,000. there was no advent* /e of going into the larger scheme with backet dredge and suitable plant for its working. What the Harbour Board really expected to be able fo expend was only the cost of dredging of a connecting channel or a basin between the three wharves. This, it was pointed out, was necessary to allow the small steamers up to seven feet draught, which can only work tho bar at high water, to move about from one wharf to another, either loading or unloading during the times between high water. An estimate of the amount involved in the proposed modified scheme of improvements was given at 355100. The question will probably be considered at tho next meeting of the board. HURUNUI’S MOVEMENTS. Tho Hurunui, now loading at Bluff, is to proceed thence to Fort Chalmers, Timaru, Napier, and Wellington. She is to leave here about February Bth for Loudon. THE KENT TO LOAD.
