PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. On. Saturday next tho annual battl* between tho town and country athlete* will eventuate on the Basin Reserve, A full championship programme will be submitted, and the liberal provision, of nine events is allotted, to tho handicap division. Considerable interest is bemg manifested in the contest for tho MoVmy Shield, and tho present holders, tho , Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, are up against a stiff proposition in defending their right to hold the_ shield for another season. Teams will compete from Feilding, Palmerston, Woodville, Master! on. and Wanganui. Notwithstanding tho excellent report* obtained from the Manawatn district, it is thought that tho Masterton Amateur Athletic Club will prove a very tough nut to crack. This club has no less than seventy members in active training, each of whom is imbued with the idea of annexing the shield. Should their efforts prove successful, Wairaiapa will then possess both the track and cross-country championships—an enviable record, indeed. _ Entries close to-day with Mr A. G. Kitto, care of Kitto and Sons, Manners street, or the hou. secretary, Mr G. A. Scott, No. 1, Willie street. Late entries will be accepted up to Monday night on payment of double entry fees.
