REFUSING TO TAKE THE OATH. A MAGISTRATE IN DOUBT. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Mr Bailey, S.M., said that he had given thought to a question raised as to whetner refusal to take the oath was a punishable offence. Strictly, he believed it was not, and he would require to be satisfied that after their previous punishment each man was requested to take the oath. He would advise the withdrawal of the present charges, the issuing of notices to each to be posted (registered for preference), and then the charges relaid. The polioo agreed to this course. The folknving offenders were punished as stated in each case, with costs, for failure to render personal service as required by the Act: Herbert Ellis Asquith 20s, Thomas Anderson os (without costs). Cuthbert L. Berry ss, Alfred John Breakwell (also charged with failure to take the oath of allegiance) 20s, on a charge of not registering Walter Couling 20s, Robert J. Olarke was convicted and discharged, Claude L. Coo 20s, Edward E. Edwards £2, William Farrow 10s, Frederick O. Hobson 20s, William F. Keys 20s, Frederick Langdon 40s (a charge of. failing to take the oath was adjourned for one week}, George P. Pattimore 20s, William Linton 40s, Herbert MacDonald 10s, Franklin G. Ryland 5s (without costs), James Harold Hughes 40s, John Thompson 6s (without costs). HASTINGS, January 24. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day a number of territorials convicted of failing to attend a parade were mulcted in penalties ranging from £2 to .£5 and costs, and deprived of civil rights for a period of five years. Francis H. Powley, charged with obstructing a parade, and with remaining in the drill halL where the parade was being held, after ordered to leave, was fined fOs and costs.
