Playing four-a-side, Australia (at Sydney last week) defeated the hitherto unbeaten British Isles quartette, thus avenging Australasia’s defeat in the memorable Davis Cup contest at Melbourne in November. As was generally predicted, Brookes had his revenge on Parke, who undoubtedly lifted the cup by his sensational victory over the Victorian in their previous meeting, winning in straight sets, and that after Parke had led 5—2 in the opening set. Most remarkable of all, however, was the Australian champion’s wonderful display against Dixon on January 17th, the Englishman being beaten in two love sets, Brookes showing form which Dixon declares he has never seen equalled in his long career of lawn tennis. Another noteworthy feature was the capture of all four doubles by the Australians, a performance that could not have been effected but for the inclusion of the Sydney crack, A. B. Jones, whose double-play is cabled to have been magnificent. Ho also defeated Lowe in straight sots, and captured the first set of his single with Beamish, the only player to win two rubbers for the Britishers. The complete scores of both historic contests are appended: Tost Match. Australia defeated British Isles at Sydney on January 17th and 18th, 1913, by 7 rubbers to 5, 17 sets to 12, and 149 games to 121. Details: Singles. — N. E. Brookes v. ,T. C. Parke, 9—7, 6—2. N. E. At the time these notes were due for publication only the first day’s results of the Wairarapa championship mecting had reached Wcdlington. I). Co Iran and A. W. Soundy, well-known Wellingtonians, had won evcr.v match they had played. Other familiar names amongst the competitors were J. L. Blundell, S. R. Gawith, D. Howden, and Miss Tennent. The famous Hughes sisters (Pahiatua) were also competing. The attendance of spectators was small, .but improved during the afternoon, and the various contests were watched with keen interest. The courts wore in capital order. No less than sixty games were got off during the day. JOTTINGS. Whatever happens when Victoria College meets Wellington in the men’s senior competition cannot affect the decision of the championship, which by virtue of their win against Brougham Hill on Saturday last, lias been won for the second successive year by Victoria College. The champions did not sustain a defeat in either round. Brougham Hill occupied the position of run-ners-up, having' been unbeaten in matches other than against College. Those who have played for the winners during the season are R. St. J. Beere (captain), G. M. Cleghorn, J. B. Parker, D. S. Smith, F. A. Delamare, and H. Fathers. In the men’s junior competition, Rona Bay defeated Johnsonville, Victoria College A defeated Kilbimio, and Trinity Church defeated Karori, all with the greatest of ease. At Johnsonville W. Mills, promoted from the fourth grad© to fill a vacancy, played very ably in running Dave Isaacs to a close finish (4 —6, 5—6). Along with Cook (another fourth-grader), Mills also captured the first set of the second double, so that altogether he made a creditable showing. K. A. Henderson, in the absence of P. H. Putnam, was the only Karori player to win a rubber against Trinity Church, though Clark ran him to two closely contested sets (5 —6, 4—6). No one else captured even a set for Karori. Promoted to first place in the Kilbimie team Worboys failed to defeat that solid proposition, Taylor, the game ending 6—4, 6 —5. For College, Clere, Robertson and Reed were in good form, while W._ Norrie shaped best of the remaining Kilbiraieites. In the third grad© championship the most remarkable incident was the reappearance of E. Beeves in the Brougham Hill team after having defeated a well-known senior the previous Saturday.
