Arrived ; 11 a.m., Wellington, from Picton. WANGANUI, Friday. The Tai arrived from Wellington at 11.45 this morning, and returns to the same port this evening. LYTTELTON, Friday. Messrs. Shaw, Savill, and Co.’s ship Merope cleared lor London to-day with a cargo of Canterbury produce Valued at £82.009, and nine passengers. She sails to-morrow. The following vessels were in port last night:— Steamers—Samson, Manawatu, Napier, Ringarooma, "Waitaki. and Stormbir.l, Ships—Wairoa, Opawa, Arethusa, and Fealandin, Barque—Malay. Brig— Neptune. Three-masted schooners Ellerton and Sophia. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Rakala and Messrs. Shaw, Savill, and Co.’s ship St. Leonards sailed for London yesterday, the former at 7 a.m. and the latter about noon. As both vessels are clean and In splendid trim, a closely contested race should ensue. Since the vessels have been in the stream a considerable amount of betting has been indulged in. The Kakaia was the favorite, odds being freely offered by her backers. However, the old favorite trader will much belie her reputation if she does not arrive in the channel twenty-four hours, at any rate, in advance of her antagonist. The captains and officers of both vessels have rendered themselves so deservedly popular, thatjit isdlfficult to wish either success against the other, but we may nevertheless heartily wish them both bon voyage. The Union Company’s steamer Penguin left Ru'sell on the 13th ; Auckland on the 35th ; called at Tauranga, Gisborne, and Napier, leaving the latter port for Wellington at 12 30 p-m. on Thursday, arriving alongside the wharf at 7.20 a.m. yesterday. The Penguin sailed again at 4.30 p.m. for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers with the Southern portion of the San Francisco mail. The steamer Stormbird left Foxton at noon yesterday, and arrived here at 11 o’clock last night. Sjo leaves for Wanganui at noon on Monday. The Union Company’s steamer Waitaki arrived In port at 3 p.m. yesterday, with the San Francisco mail. She left the Manukau at 11 a.m. on the 17th, was off New Plymouth at 4.15 a.m. on the ISth, got away an hour and half later, and arrived at Nelson at 8 p.m.: left again at midnight, and was detained in Blind Bay owing to dense fog, reached Picton at 9.29 a.m. on the 19th ; .sailed for Wellington an hour later, arriving as above. Experienced flue weather to Taranaki, thence heavy sea to arrival. The Waitaki leaves for Picton and Nelson on Monday afternoon. The steamer Charles Edward left Nelson yesterday afternoon and will arrive here this morning. She leaves again at 0 p.m. for Nelson, Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika. The steamer Lyttelton arrived from Blenheim at 5.30 a.m. yesterday, and returned to the same port at 8 o’clock last night. $ • ifc«The Union-Company’s steamer Ringarooma, from Melbourne and Hobarton via Southern ports, arrived In harbor at 1.40 pm. yesterday. She leaves again at 8 o'clock this morning for Sydney via Napier, Gisborne, Auckland, and Russell. The steamer Manawatu arrived from Wanganui yesterday afternoon, and returns to the same port at 8 o’clock to-night. The Government steamer Stella sailed for Picton and Nelson with several members of Parliament shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday evening. The steamer Jane Douglas should arrive to-day from Kaikoura and Lyttelton. The steamer Napier arrived from Blenheim at •4.30 p.m. yesterday, and will return to the same port at 12 o’clock to-night. The steamer Tui should arrive from Foxton this morning. She will have her new mainmast to replace the one carried away on her last trip stepped during the afternoon. Tho steamor Wallace got away for Nelson and West Coast ports at 5 o’clock yesterday evening. The steamer Huia left for Foxton at 8 o’clock list night. The Union Company’s steamer Wanaka will arrive from Lyttelton and Port Chalmers to-monow forenoon. Tho Union Company’s steamer Arawata is due tomorrow from Auckland and East Coast ports. She leaves for Melbourne and Hobarton via Southern ports at 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon. The English barque Bebington and the American vessels Hawkhope and Atlanta will probably arrive off the Heads either to-day or to-morrow. The barque Ansdell, with a cargo of hardwood for the now railway wharf, arrived off the Heads yesterday afternoon, but was unable to make tho harbor last night on account of the strong north-west wind.
