TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
(PER PRESS AG KNOT.) TimaeU, Friday. A meeting of the proprietors of the principal newspapers in the colony was held here at 1.30 p.m. yesterday, and lasted all the afternoon, the business transacted being chiefly of a private nature. The following papers were represented:— New Zealand Herald, Auckland Star, Wellington Post, Lyttelton Times, Timaru Herald, Dunedin Herald, Dunedin Star, and Otago Daily Times. Auckland, Friday. The New Zealand Accident Insurance Company has completed an important negotiation with the New Zealand Insurance Company. The latter is to represent them, giving to the Accident Company the use of their branch management, staff, and offices in New Zealand and the Australian colonies. Mr. Justice Gillies goes to England on two years’ leave of absence. Dunedin, Friday. The Union Company’s new steamer Te Anau left Glasgow for Dunedin on the 18th December with 85 passengers. Christchurch, Friday. A man named Edwards was brought to the hospital to-day from Kaikoura. He had attempted suicide by taking chlorodyne, and afterwards cutting his throat with a penknife. A man named Rowland was brought down from Amberley, where he had been running wild in a nude state. He is supposed to be a lunatic from the effects of drink.
