(REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.) Lonbon, December 18. Lord Dufferin has arrived at Peterborough. The report of the liquidators of the Glasgow Bank states that a final payment will speedily be made. A further dividend is announced, making fifteen shillings in all. The Lord Lieutenant has appealed for subscriptions to relieve the distress existing in Ireland. St. Petersburg, December 18. The Empress is ill with a severe attack of pleurisy. Vienna, December 18. The Emperor of Austria in a speech referred to the friendly alliance of Germany which was to secure the maintenance of peace. Calcutta, December 18. It is believed that the British are in a position at Sherpar in strong and well fortified cantonments outside Cabul, and that the hills near are in the possession of the British troops. The British entrenchments have been strengthened, and, with ample supplies of materia), there is every reason to believe that the position is tenable, pending the arrival of reinforcements. General Gough’s advance has been stopped by the hostile tribes. Reinforcements will be sent from Peshawur, where reserve forces are forming. The Sirdar Abdullus Khan has seized the citadel of Herat, and proclaimed himself governor. Ayoub Khan, his brother, has been seized and imprisoned. In addition to the troops with Baker and McPherson Roberts’ force numbers 5000 with 23 gurs. Sydney, Friday. The Full Court have confirmed the conviction of the bushrangers. Two Chinese lepers were discovered in the outskirts of Sydney ; one died, the other has been isolated.
