In the event of the Government deciding to call a Thames man to the Upper House, it is considered here that the selection should be made from either the Council chairman, J. Miller, L. Bignall, or J. Ehrenfield. The gold returns for the month amount to 38550 z. The Big Pump will be sold next month. Auckland, Thursday. Juvenile offenders are multiplying in this city, Two were ordered a whipping to-day. A memorial, expressing a hope that Mr. Hurst will take no notice of the adverse resolution passed at the late meeting of electors, is being numerously signed. New Plymouth, Thursday. Mrs. Connett, a middle-aged woman, the wife of a carpenter, committed suicide this morning at 7 o’clock, by cutting her throat. She tried to out her throat three years ago, but recovered. She leaves a family. Poxton, Thursday. A very heavy shock, or rather succession of shocks, of earthquake occurred here at 2.25 this mornin". The direction appeared to be from east to west. The oscillation was longsustained and extremely severe. No damage was done. A further slight shock occurred at about 1 o'clock. Mastebton, Thursday A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at 2.30 this morning. Wangahbi, Thursday. A very smart shock of earthquake, was felt here this morning at 2.25. Christchurch, Thursday. Edgar Osborne, charged with setting fire to the premises of S. J. Harle last night, was remanded for seven days.

At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day it was suggested that some of the iron material required for the proposed docks at Lyttelton could he better supplied in the colony than from the Home market. It was re-oived to draw up a schedule of machinery to be ordered, and send it to Wellington for the opinion of the members of the Board now there. It is intended to connect the Harbor Board office at Christchurch with Lyttelton by telephone. The recent investigation as to tin; susceptibility to color blindness of the employees of the railway department shows that 2.1 per cent, are partially color blind. In the Christchurch section 13 out of 266 ha 1 defective sight, and on the Oamaru section only one out of 23m. Last night an attempt was mad to burn the premises of B. J. Hall, St. A-nph-sf-rcet. A barrel of tar which had been ;.r. vionsly placed against the store, had been set fire to, and had scorched the weather-boarding of the building. Luckily the discovery was made by a plumber named Henry Oakey, who, with another man, succeeded in putting the fire out, and therefore no serious damage was done. The fire bells did not ring, nor was any alarm given. A young man named Edgar Osborne, son of Alfred Osborne, the well-known undertaker of this city, was arrested between nine and ten this morning. He was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court, and remanded until Monday. A civil action was heard in the K.M. Court to-day, in which J. T. Mitchell sought to recover £lO from H. W. Anson, secretary of the Canterbury Coursing Club, the value of the Sapling Stakes, won by Mitchell’s dog Smoker at last coursing meeting. The club refused payment on the ground that plaintiff's dog was over age. Evidence was given on each side, acd the age of the dog was proved to he greater than was allowed by the club regulations. A verdict was given for defendant, with costs, the club exonerating plaintiff from any suspicion of fraud in the matter. Dunedin, Thursday. The Princess Theatre was crowded last night, and the performance was even more indecent than on Tuesday. At the Supreme Court sitting in Banco, the Nation case was further mentioned. No cause was shown. Mr. Cook urged that the Judge had power to strike a solicitor off the rolls Mr. Justice Williams thought the rule was to leave the matter to the Court of Appeal to deal with. If that Court should choose to act, well and good. It it decided otherwise, he would dispense with it on his return. At the Harbor Board to-day, the engineer and harbor-master submitted reports, controverting the statements made against the harbor and bar by the Port Chalmers people in their memorial to the Governor, which was published in the Star, but the Herald refused to publish it. Timabu, Thursday. £2lß—representing between 4090 and 4500 people—was taken at the show gates, to-day. At the sale of a portion of the Seadown Estate, to-day, 1409 acres were aoW, realising a total sum of £15,325. The attendance was very large but the bidding lacked spirit. The Jewish Bazaar closes to-night. So far, over £3OO has been taken. The Committee of the High School, to-day, appointed Mr. A. H. R. Dawson, M.A., of Melbourne, rector, and Mr. W. S. Stewart, 8.A., second master.* The appointment of a lady superintendent was deferred. There were no less than ninety applications for three situations.
