NEWS BY CABLE.
(REUTER'S TELEGRAMS.) London, October 28. In reference to yesterday’s telegram stating that arrangements had been made between the Orient and Pacific lines, whereby the two companies were to run steamers fortnightly between London and Australia direct, commencing in January next, the companies believe that the magnitude of the trade and increasing attractions of the Australasian Colonies for settlers and visitors justify the extension of the enterprise. The new service will retain the name of the Orient Line, conducted by F. Green and Co., and Anderson, Anderson, and Co., joint managers. The Marchioness of Lome has arrived from Canada. Sr. Petersburg, October 29. 30,000 Russian troops have been ordered to Central Asia. Calcutta, October 29. General Roberts is storing five months’ supplies at Cabul, and is making preparations for hutting the troops. Sydney, Thursday. The cabmen’s strike is ended. The Wakatipu and the Austrian frigate Heligoland have sailed for New Zealand. Albany, Thursday. The P. and O. Company’s s.s. Assam arrived at King George’s Sound to-day.
