FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE HARBOR.
The steamer Stormbird, which left for Foxton yesterday afternoon, had got about two miles down the harbor when an accident happened by which a seaman lost his life. It appears that the chief officer and a man named Patrick Long were engaged stowing the anchor, and were sitting on the anchor stock, when the latter gave way, and both men fell into the water. The accident was not noticed for a moment or two, but when the men were missed, the mate was seen astern holding up Long. A boat was lowered to the rescue, but before it could reach the spot the mate became exhausted, and released his hold of Long, who at i.tu-.-x sank. The accident happened at abia- '.;i p.m. Captain Doile at once put back reported the occurrence, and then proceeded on his voyage. The Harbor-master despatched a boat to the spot to grapple for the body. Long was a single man, and a native of Wellington. The vessel will probably return to Wellington to-morrow, and an enquiry will be held on Monday.
