WELLINGTON SALVAGE CORPS.

An influential meeting was held last night at the Polytechnic, in order to elect officers to represent each ward, and that the names of those elected might be submitted at the next meeting of the Council, with a request that the captains be appointed fire superintendents. Mr. Nathan occupied the chair. Mr. Waterhouse, jun., hon. secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. The Chairman said that since the last meeting the Town Clerk had been communicated with and a motion laid befere the Council, but it appeared that it was out of order. The right course to pursue was to elect officers, and then get the Council to endow them with the necessary power, otherwise they would have no legal right to enter any house. The resolutions of the previous meeting were then read. Mr. Moss would greatly object to table such a motion. He considered the number of superintendents proposed in the resolutions (5) too many for the size of the town, and called upon Mr. Allen, as a City Councillor, to express his views on the matter. Mr. Palmer said that the idea of having five superintendents was to always have one ready in an emergency, and that although the town was comparatively small, it was scattered. An adjournmeat was proposed by Mr. Smith, to which Mr. Moss objected on the ground of unnecessary delay, and asked if the meeting would not reduce the number of superintendents. Mr. Graham gave his opinion that ■■■.-ilv • corps were most useful, and that of -ac New Zealand cities, Wellington requited one most. He should be sorry to see cold water thrown on such a beneficial movement.

After the report had been adopted, the Secretary took the names of gentlemen willing to be enrolled. A sub-committee was then formed, and the meeting adjourned till 10.30 a.m. the following Monday, when the election of officers will take place.
