Both prisoners were then remanded. THE KAIWARBA STABBING CASE.
George Arbelli was charged with stabbing John Stockbridge at Kaiwarra on the 11th instant.
The prosecutor, a laborer, deposed that he was working at Ngahauratiga, and on the 11th instant he went to Kaiwarra to vote at the Wellington Country Districts election. In the afternoon ho forgot a good deal of what took place. He did not know the prisoner. On coming to his senses tho next morning he found he was stabbed in two places on the head. He had no recollection how he received his injuries. Ho only remembered getting into a row at the Waterloo Hotel. He was now quite recovered. Dr. Gillon deposed that the prosecutor was brought to tho Hospital on tho evening of the 11th with two incised wounds, one on his forehead and the other on bis head. The wounds were not directly serious, but there was always the danger of erysipelas. They could have been produced with a knife. David McNamara, cabdriver, deposed to being at Kaiwarra on the 10th instant. He saw prisoner and Stockbridge together at the Waterloo Hotel and in the road. They were scuffling, and witness saw the gleam of something bright in prisoner's hand. Witness saw him strike Stockbridge over the head five or sir times, and immediately afterwards tho latter’s face was covered with blood. Ho called out that prisoner was using a knife, and he saw Arbelli throw it away. He picked it up and gave it to some one, he forgot to whem, for he was intent upon separating Stockbridge from tho three or four men who were on to him. Charles Crowtber saw the fight, and blood upon prosecutor’s head. He did not seo any blow struck, but saw the knifo picked up. Charles O’Donovan also gave evidence for the prosßoution. Tho prisoner called several witnesses for the defence, among them Mr. Fitzgerald, landlord of tho hotel, James Webb, T. E. Wilson, and two others, all of whom gave evidence, accounting for the wounds by the fact that Stockbridge was pushed through a window and his head cut by the glass. The magistrate considered the evidinco was very conflicting, and gave the prisoner the benefit of the doubt by dismissing the case.
