PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.
The following report of the Public Works Committee will be considered this evening by the City Council, in addition to the report postponed from the previous meeting : " The committee beg to report—That they cannot recommend that the works applied for in Frederick-street be proceeded with, viz., kerbing, channelling, and gravelling footpaths —estimated cost £147; nor similar works in Haiuing-street—estimated cost £B7 ; nor that Mr. J. Peter's claim, on account of a horse kiljed, be entertained, the accident not having occurred on Corporation property ; nor that the petition for the removal of the express stand from Panama-street to Grey-street be complied with ; nor that the claim for £2OOO by the representatives of the late Mr. Sohultz be recoguised ; nor that Mr. McKirdy's claim for loss of horse and cart be recognised ; and that the proposed permanent levels of Upper Taranaki-street, Wright-street, and Wallanstreet, have been authorised to be advertised, in term 3 of the Act. " The committee beg further to recommend —That a drain be laid down in Tory-street, estimated coat £36 ; also, in Boston-terrace, at an estimated cost of £IS 2s. 6d., the residents undertaking to pay half that amount, to be connected with a drain in Wordsworthstreet, to be laid at an estimated cost of £33 10s. ; that Mr. C. Palmer's house in Hunterstreet be raised to the level of the street, at au estimated cost of £ls ; that no alteration be made in the levels of the footpath in the Tinakori-road, as applied for by Mr. W. E. E. Brown and others ; that half the cost of repairing the Tinakori drain (£46 17s. 2d.) be repaid to the Anglican Church Trustees ; that the trustees of the Basin Reserve be requested to have all the gates thrown open to the public, other steps being taken for preventing the thoroughfare across the cricket ground ; that nothing be done at present to Pirie-street or Brougham-street, in the way of altering levels, but that the most urgent I repairs be at ones attended to ; that Messrs. Cleary and Co. be allowed £SO extra on account of their contract, that being the difference between thoirs and the next lowest tender, they having made an error of £SS in their calculations ; that the residents of Mitchelltown be allowed to construct a roadway through town belt reserve G, in accordance- with plan approved by the City Surveyor ; that the ratepayers of King-street having paid £4O 15s. out of the £oo demanded of them, the authorised works be proceeded with, on their undertaking to pay the balance within a, reasonable time ; that a transfer of lease of town belt reserve No. 30, from George Tonks to John Peaiamelli, be sanctioned ; that I accounts amounting to £683 10s, 7d., be passed for payment."
