RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Balclutha, Saturday. At 4.30 yesterday afternoon, a goods train, consisting of an engine aud seven trucks, went off the line about a mile beyond Kaituki. The engine fell over one side, with one truck below and one truck above it ; one truck was thrown on the opposite side of the line. John Chalmers, the engine-driver, was jammed up on the engine, and suffered severe internal injuries. It waslfound that iris back was broken. He was taken to McNioool’s house adjoining, where he died this morning at 2 o’clock. He leaves a wife and two children. Lawrence, the stoker, escaped without o scratch. A special train was sent from Dunedin with a doctor, but he arrived too late to attend to the injured man. The line was cleared by five o’clock this morning.
