The nomination for Mayor took place yesterday. Samuel Gibbes was the only candidate, therefore he was declared elected.
The barque Duukold arrived last night from Glasgow, with pipes for the waterworks.
Christchurch, Thursday.
The pigeon race from Timaru, in connection ■with the Christchurch Poultry Show, was considered a great success, the time being the fastest on record. Mr. O’Donoghue’s Smile took first prize ; 1 hour 49mins. 38secs. An inquiry was held by the Collector of Customs into the loss of the barque 8.L., wrecked in the gale throe weeks ago. The decision is not yet given. Dunedin, Thursday.
A fatal accident happened at Gibbs and day ton's saw mills to-day. A young man named Eox placed a bag on the shaft, and while laying oyer and riding on the shaft his clothes became entangled, - and he was twisted round. His legs were broken, and one of his arms torn from the body. He died soon after his admission to the hospital. In the case of Turnbull v. Proudfoot, at the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Hagget intimated that negotiations between the parties were going on, which would probably lead to a settlement. Tho oaso was accordingly held over. The Bank of New Zealand stopped the Tapanui Borough Council’s credit, on account of its overdrafts being £SOO. The bank, through its solicitor, sent the Council notice to pay up within a month. The railway formation on the Tapanui line is finished to tho Pomahaka, where people want the line opened to. At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, a petition to Parliament, re the Government encroachment on the Board’s endowment, was adopted. An Inspection Committee to superintend the construction of a hopper dredge at Home, is to be appointed. Timaru, Thursday.
The stewards of the Tim.uu Steeplechases hold a meeting to-morrow to consider a protest lodged against Ana, the winner of the Consolation, on the ground that the rider, Ly ford, was disqualified at Dunedin for foul racing, and that disqualification was endorsed by the Grand National Steeplechase Club. The contractors for the new Post and Telegraph Offices commenced work to-day. A leaping match for £5 a-side took place to-day bettveen T. Lyford, of Christchurch, and T. S. Fraser, of Timaru. The former won, clearing 4ft. lOin. Grahasistown, Thursday. The Kurunui Hill clearing up for the month amounted to 1970 z. Mangoa and party in the Alburnia claim, crushed 25 loads for a return of 750 z. Idwt.
