THE WATER SUPPLY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —We are informed that the Corporation cannot see their way to allow a road through the water reserve, so long as that is the only source from whence Wellington is supplied. I read this to mean that when supplied from another source there will be no further hindrance. If this be so, then no great length of time will elapse before Karori and Te Aro will ho connected by a good road, unless heavy expenses are incurred to increase the present supply. It appears the powers that be are awakening to tho importance of getting a better supply, and it will be well for the inhabitants of Wellington that they keep this matter prominently in view ; for should next summer prove as dry as I have seen many seasons here, and no action be taken, poor Richard’s proverb, “The worth of water is known when the well is dry,” will assuredly be verified. I write this in no captious mood ; but foreseeing danger, I wish to sound the note of alarm, for which I can show reasons which cannot be evaded or ignored. I have been a resident in Karori for nearly 30 years, and on taking a retrospective .view, I cannot recollect such a favored summer as the bygone one. During the months of January and February the pastures were green and beautiful ; whilst in those mouths in previous years they used to be parched and brown. This will be tome out by those that were close observers. There is yet another reason, the result of which has saved me much labor. I use tho water from a small stream that flows through my garden. The last summer it has not failed, although it has been dry for three or four months every summer since the bush was cleared away.—l am, &c., Bobt. Donald. Karori, June 12.,
