THE NATIVE DIFFICULTY.
TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I hear that after all there is to he no Maori war, and X am sure that we shall all be very glad of it—everyone, except perhaps a lot of hot-hoaded young fellows who, having enlisted in the A.C. and have had unagreeable promenade to Taranaki, are anxious for a little honor and glory. I believe, however, that the Government, if they are able to nettle this disturbance, are now in a position to confer a great benefit on the country, and at the same time to get a great deal of honor and glory for themselves. War, or no war-, of coarse after so much anxiety and expense, we shall expect some material guarantee or “ rectification of the frontier” from the natives. Onr men ought certainly to march through the Waimate Plains, and demand the surrender of some of the murderers that they are sheltering, as well as obtain some promise that the survey should be no more interfered with. At the same time the short Mountain-road, which I am informed is nothing just nmv but a narrow mud hole, should be considerably widened by felling a quantity more bush. Above all, the present moment should be seized on for insisting on the opening of the King Country and the prosecution of the Waikato Railway. A good demonstration of the Waikato settlors, with their famous Cavalry in the north and the Armed Constabulary from Taranaki at the south end of the district, might have a good effect. I really hope that this last murderer, Hiroki, will he caught and put on his trial. We can say nothing, I about Te Kooti or Titokowaru, as they have long ago been placed in the Maori Valhalla ; but a common vulgar assassin ought at any rate to be punished,—X am, &c., D. B. Johnsonville, July 12.,
