In article on life assurance the S.M, Herald says :—“The very life and soul of insurance institutions consists in getting new business ; bat may not this spirit of competition and rivtalry be carried too far ? The more such inI stitutious are multiplied, the greater will be the competition, and though the axiom of mercantile men may be perfectly true that ‘ competition is tho soul of business,' it should be remembered that the principle of life assurance involves more than ordinary business The more the aggregate contributions of the people are wasted on the machinery of competition, the greater is the public loss. If the principle of insurance means anything, it means provision against indigence. The effects of indigence fall partly upon private charity, but much more upon the State, because the' State has to provide asylums, hospitals, infirmaries, orphanages, benevolent and other institutions for the indigent at the general public expense. If it be true that ‘prevention is better than cure,' why should not the State provide a great National Insurance Society under which all would be protected and none injured. Such a plan would at least save the waste of competition.” Holloway's Pills. —The Grand Secret.
