A fire broke out this morning in a shop occupied by Mrs. Beasley, Rrinces-street. The brigade was promptly on the ground. Little damage was done, Silver medals have been issued to numbers of the police force, to be worn by them on the front of their caps. Fifteen arrests for drunkenness and larceny were made to-day. The Board of Governors to-day resolved to start evening classes in connection with the Grammar School, commencing immediately. Sunday.

A strong easterly gale has been blowing for tbe last twenty-four hours. During last night Ki-rsling’s large yacht Daphne broke from her raooiings, and drifted on the Breakwater. Men from the man-of-war were working at her all day, and with the assistance of a steamer succeeded in floating her off this evening. The Ladybird experienced the full force of the gale last night from Russell to Auckland} the passage occupied twenty hours. The Tararua will probably not leave ts-night, unless the weather moderates. The Hinemoa has not yet arrived; she has probably taken shelter at Kawau. Chbisichdech, Saturday.

A man named William Barnard, butcher at Kaiapoi, was arrested to-night in town, charged with stealing 400 sheep, the property of Robert Chapman, Spring Bank run, Moeraki Downs. _ Notice has been given of nine applications for Ijcenaes to new hotels in Christchurch. Amongst the applicants is Mr. E. J. Coker, late of Wellington, and well known as an hotelkeeper throughout the colony. A „ inou -st was held this afternoon on the body of John Goodwin, which was taken out of the Avon on Thursday._ Mary Anne Roe, a daughter of deceased, said she last saw her father alive on Wednesday at his own house, Harewood-road. some protection is needed at that portion of the river bank to prevent similar casualties in future.” Mr.' J. J. Loe, of Leeatoa, runholder and merchant, attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself with a breech-loadiug gnjMn his private office about noon to-day. Ihe charge glanced off his cheek-bone, and hopes are entertained of his recovery. The reason is stated to be temporary monetary embarassmeat. The Mayor of Christchurch has _ requested that Monday, the 26th instant, instead of Saturday the 24th instant, be proclaimed a public holiday, on account of the latter being market day. Hiscncks’ and Hayman'a Dramatic Company at the Theatre Royal are doing a moderate business. At the Gaiety, Miss Amy Johns look a b.nefit on Friday night. There was a crowded house. Some new dramatic serio-comic business takes place at the Gaiety on Monday evening, Ml-ses Lizzie Morgan and Jeuny Xye being engaged. Miss Davgon and Mr. Wybert Reeves are engaged for New Zealand by 'Messrs, Hiscocks and Dayman. Invercargill, Saturday. One hundred and forty-one nominations for immigrants have been made at the immigration office, and will be sent homo by the outgoing Sau Francisco mail They are all of a good class. The sale of the Spar Bush estate took place to-day, aud was a malted success. Mr. J. F. Martin, the auctioneer, wielded the hammer to some purpose, and bad a numerous and appreciative audience. The lots ranged in extent from two hundred acres to three hundred and sixty acres, and all but two were disposed of at an average price of a little over £4 per acre. The terras were the most liberal ever offered at a private land sale. The weather now is very fine. The Maoris predict a good winter, and it is devoutly prayed for here.
