MARINE DEPARTMENT.

From the annual report of the Marine Department we extract the following tables of general interest :—The expenditure on new lighthouses out of Immigration and Public Works Loan during the financial year 1877-78 was as follows:—Brothers lighthouse, £340 65.; Portland Island, £1704 10s. 9d.; Puysegur Point, £3418 12s. Id.; Mokohinau, £43 10s.; Cape Maria Van Diemen, £1863 12s. lid.; Centre Island, £1905 19s. 7d.; Moeraki, £2804 2s, 3d.; Akaroa, £2510 15s. 2d- - , Cape Saunders, £545 4a, Id.; Timaru, £7OB Bs. 3d.; Hinemoa, s.s., £7 9a. 3d.; Stella, £2458 ss. 10d.; total, £18,310 16s, 2d. The following statement shows the amount of-pilotage, port charges, &c., collected at the four chief ports in New Zealand during the financial year ended 30th June, 1878: —
