THE GOVERNOR AT CHRISTCHURCH.
(per press agency.) His Excellency the Governor at Lyttelton by the Arawata early this morning, and was brought on to Christchurch by a special train. He was conveyed in a carriage and pair to the Club, whose guest he is during his stay. At one o’clock he held a levee at the Provincial Council Chambers, at which farewell addresses were presented by the City Council and the Selwyn County Council. His Excellency, in replying, said he would never forget the kindness he had met with at the hands of the people of New Zealand. Speaking of the prosperity of the colony during the last twenty-Sve years, he said it had made more material progress in that time than any other part of the world. In conclusion, he assured them that whatever sphere of life he might occupy he should always do everything that lay in his power for the benefit of New Zealand. To-night he is entertained at a banquet at the Club.
