PENNY BANKS.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.

Sin, —I notice in your issue of this morning an intimation that penny savings banks will be established in the schools at the close of the vacation. I think I may safely say that the teachers will not be glad to learn this, whatever the initiators of the movement may think about it. The general impression among the former was that neither the department nor the Board would take definite action in the matter.

The Government Savings Banks, which may be found in every post town, offer sufficient facilities to children for saving their money, and there wai absolutely no need for the elaborate scheme which has so long exercised the brains of a few enthusiasts.

Whether the teachers take charge of the savings banks or not, there can be no doubt that they will suffer considerable inconvenience and annoyance therefrom, and what perhaps is of more consequence to the public, the legitimate school work must to a certain extent bo interfered with. It would be interesting to know what proportion of experienced teachers would be found to favor the scheme.—l am, &c,, X.
