CHURCH MEETING.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.
Sir, —Will you permit me to call attention to the fact that the Church of England meeting, held under the presidency of the Bishop last evening, December 19, owing to the paucity of the attendance may be considered a disgrace to the Church people of Wellington, exhibiting as it does the little interest taken by the members of this Church in an object intended to benefit the whole of its people. Had a meeting for a political purpose been called, how different would have been tho appearance of the hall.
Are people so forgetful of the manifold blessings they enjoy here, or so taken up with mammon, that religion can find no placo in their minds, or time at its disposal ? The question is, why should it be so ? or why should so little interest be taken in religious matters ? Surely the people want stirring up to an idea of its importance —the one thing necessary. We find people always willing to give, but still exhibiting such apathy in devoting some little of their time to religion or its requirements. Last evening I looked round the hall thinking to see many faces a person might have reasonably expected to have seen there, but was disappointed.—l am, &c, Catholiotjs. December 20.
