Votliir.2 of iniinntanee has transpired in tho im,«l mark', during tire punt week, and we report no J-hainra in ciuotoliuna. A fair trade is doing, with .ivolciC siuns of progress; but competition keeps down "IjeS toX ffi margin of profit, while the stocks on hand remain heavy.
Nothing of any Importance has been doing in shares during the past week, the general tendency being downwards, with nn evident desire to realise. MELBOURNE MARKETS. The following is Messrs. Goldsbrongh and Co.’s report for the week ending November 0 Wool—We catalogued 4931 bales for oursale to-day, and have sold at auction and by private contract during the week 3201 bales. Some high prices were realised for superior greasy wools, a portion of Mr. Gibson’s clip from Tasmania selling at ICjd. Washed lots also sold at fair prices—average realising ISd to 20d per lb, the latter price being obtained for 12S bales crosi-bredfrom Mr. J. B. Pearson, branded Tara. Superior clips are ruling at about last week’s rates, but all other descriptions must be quoted lower, the continued unfavorable English advices having evidently had a depressing effect. Sheepskins.—We report a steady market, and have disposed of a moderate supply at quotations, viz;— Butchers’green skins, 3s 6d to 6s 6d each; do, dry, 2s Cd to 5s 6d each ; pelts, at prices ranging up to Is 9d each; dry skins, inferior to medium. 3d to 6d , per lb; do, medium to superior, 5d to Gjd par lb. Hides.—A good demand exists for heavy weights, but calf skin's and light hides meet with little inquiry. We have effected sales as under:—Ox hides (average sizes), IGs to 27s each; cow hides, do, 10s to 15s each; Victorian salted, 24d to 34d per lb. Kangaroo Skins!”—Large fresh skins in good condition meet with moderate demand at prices ranging from €d to 9kl per lb; small sk { ns and others are difficult to place at about -Id per lb. Tallow.— Our usual Tuesday’s sale has been postponed until l*?th instant, when we wPI offer a large supply, and expect to secure prices similar to those ruling at our last sa!e. DRAIN*. Wheat.—Since our last report we have sold 243 bags wheat by private contract at the following prices : Medium to prime milling, 4s lid to 5s Old; and inferior to medium, 4s Dd to 4s lOd per bushel. Flour.—We obtained £lolos per ton fora parcel of Malcome's St. A maud. Oats—Prime New Zealand milling Is saleable at 6s 4d per bushel, and feed oats are worth up to 5s 2d per bushel. Barley—There is very little coming forward; extreme rates are obtainable for goed-sized parcels. Melhournb, November 4. Wool—We held our usual sale of small clips to-day, and had a fall attendance of buyers, and good competition. The catalogue comprised 331 bales and 100 sacks, chiefly ordinary lots—none being superior—and prices ranged from Td to Old for greasy. LONDON WOOL MARKET. We are indebted to Messrs Murray, Common, aud Co. for the following report:— The third series of wool sale; for the year closed on the 4th October, and as mentioned in our previous circulars, the market varied very considerably during its continuance. Beginning with a firm tone, which gradually increased for the first ten days, prices subsequently gave way, aud after sundry fluctuations the close of the sales showed rates .thru were, on the average, barely up to the lowest point of the second series in May and June last. One notable feature was the extremely small attendance of buyers, nn attendance far below that which we have been accustomed to sec at this time of the year for a long time past. Trade lias long besa in an unsatisfactory state, and the position is considerably agravated by the recent disclo:ures of the management of the City of Glasgow Bank, and of those firms to whom it has advanced such enormous sums of money. It is to be hoped we now know the extent to which unsound business has been drifting, but we are afraid a good deal of “rooting out” will have to take place before matters settle down on a sound basis.
