An inquest will be held to-morrow. The origin of the fire is unknown. Auckland, Friday. The following. are the insurances on the Tubal Cain:—New Zealand Company, £750; Union Company, £750. Cargo—Union Company, £1520, £SOO of which is reinsured in the New Zealand Company, and £250 in the Batavia Company. A telegram from the Hon. There is no later news. , Westport, Friday. An extensive limestone cave has been discovered near the White Clift’s, between Westport and llcefton. The explorer describes it as a magnificent sight when illuminated. A creek traverses the cave, yielding good payable gold prospects. Private information from the Lyell says that old lleefton quartz miners are passing through the township en route for Wangapeka, where a rich reef has been discovered. Christchurch, Friday. Doubt having been east on lb© story of the rescue of two men from sharks at sea, a leLt?r has been written to a paper by the captain of the llaugitikei, which confirms all that was stated on the matter, and says the story was not at all exaggerated. It is expected that 300 firemen and others will be present at the Brigade demonstration on the 26th December. A letter was also received from the Canterbury Association saying that the team to bo sent to Victoria would if time permitted'on their return play a match at Dunedin. A writ for £2OOO damages has been served upon M. J. Mallaghan, of at the instance of Mr. Mclntyre, of Invercargill. Inter*augill, Friday. _ Judge Harvey delivered judgment to-day in the case of Daniels v. Hayes. He upheld tho judgment of the Warden’s Court, and awarded a third share in Hayes’ claim to the plaintiff.
