Sho struck a large sperm whale two days before reaching the port, which after carrying away two lines and destroying the boat escaped. The following is the result of the polling for the County elections here: Reef ton—Brennan, 194 ; Davies, 193 ; McGaffio, 183 ; Aicken, 72 ; Hanken, 8. Boatmans—Gallagher, 151 ; Oaples, 135 ; Boardmau, 111 ; Walker, 95. Byrnes was elected for Antownsby a majority of two votes, and Williams for Hampden by a majority of six over McGinley. Gulline only polled five votes. There was intense public interest manifested in the elections throughout, and good order prevailed. Last night the successful candidates were carried round the town shoulder high amongst the most enthusiastic demonatations. Christchurch, Thursday. The Governor yesterday visited all departments of the College, and expressed himself highly pleased with their working. While four young men named Marcom, .Delamaine, Triggs, and Luff were out fishing off Sumuer yesterday afternoon, a squall upset the boat, and Luff was drowned. The others were rescued with much difficulty. The body has not yet been recovered. In- the rifle match to-day, Invercargill v. Christchurch, the former team were victorious. The polling finished as follows: Mosley, 93 ; Ayson, 65 ; McNeill, 61; Dalgliesh, 60. The two highest were returned. For South ‘ Molyneaux Riding Jowitt and Jenkinson were again elected. Dunedin, Thursday. The Court of Inquiry into the circumstances attending the accident to the steamship Taupo gave its decision this afternoon. The certificates of the captain and first mate have been suspended for six months. The second officer had his certificate returned, but received a severe reprimand for not reporting to the captain when he altered the ship’s course. Captain Cromarty, of the Beautiful Star, is appointed to the Taupo, and Captain Jones, late of the Samson, gets the Star. The committee appointed to report on the tramway to the Peninsula made their report to-day. They stated that the total cost would be £22,500, and that the work ceuld be accomplished before next summer. The new report was' adopted. A strong provisional directory was formed, and the prospectus will be issued shortly. The fifth annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory was held yesterday afternoon. From the report presented it appeared that the plant account of the company for this year stands at £37,344. The profit and loss account shows an available balance of £5547, out of which a dividend of 10 per cent, is to be paid, which will absorb £4847. It was resolved that the remaining 2150 unallotted shares should be issued at par.
