THE COMING ELECTIONS.

(FROM A CORRESPONDENT). A few evenings ago Mr. R. Smith, a member of the County Council, addressed a meeting of ratepayers convened by him at Pahautanni, in order that he migfit give au account of his stewardship. He spoke at some length, and enumerated a number of improvements which had been made during his term of office. He stated that ho was willing to come forward again for election if they had confidence in him, and promised to do his best to promote their interests. A large majority of the ratepayers present expressed their satisfaction at j what he had done, aud promised to support him. On Wednesday evening last Mr, James Pearce invited the ratepayers to meet him at Pahautanui, and he stated that he was a candidate for their suffrages at the forthcoming election of members for the County Council. He promised, if elected, to do his utmost for the benefit of the ratepayers generally, and one piece of work especially he pledged himself to endeavor to get done, namely, a bridge over the stream near Blackey’s Hotel, in the Horokiwi Valley. In answer to Mr. Lynch, of Paikakariki, he said he considered that they had not had a fair share of the rates expended in that portion of the riding, and promised to do his best to get it proclaimed a bye-road under the Counties Act. He expressed himself as being dissatisfied with some things Mr. Smith had done. The footpath in Pahautanui especially he looked upon as au unnecessary piece of work. He said he would not ask any of them at the present time to pledge themselves to support him, but invited all the rate--payers to record their votes on the day of election either for him or Mr. Smith. A vote ot thanks to the chairman (Mr. Galloway) concluded the business of Mv» mooting.
