CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Maginuity, Dixon, Allan, Moss, Miller, Greenfield, Young, Thompson, Diver, and Logan. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. LANDING STAGE. * Captain Williams applied to the Council for permission to erect a temporary landing stage in the harbor, at the back of Mr. Barber's premises.—Application granted. WHARF COMMITTEE'S REPORT.. The committee reported that they have decided to call for tenders for two additions, each oil x 10, one on each side of the English T, tenders to be alternative for either one or both, the first to be erected, and if found to be successful, the second within a certain fixed time. —Report accepted as read. DRAINAGE COMMITTEE. The committee bog lo report that, having taken into consideration the telegram received Irom Mr. Clarke, C.E , from London, they are of opinion that the sewage matter should he taken direct into Cook’s Strait; but before further steps avo ta ; ien the City Surveyor should report with the least possible delay as to the most suitable point (or the dotreuchmout of the drains. J. Dhanspield, Mayor. Report adopted. PDBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The committee beg to report,--!. That they decline to recommend a refund of rates in the estate of J. F. Maraetts. 2. That tenders have been called for two extra water-carts, amt that it is considered advisable tiiat salt water bo used lor street waterlog purposes during the coming summer. 3. That the City surveyor reports that Mr. J. S. Thomson’s scheme tor road formation is similar to that used for block crossings, lint is too expensive for general use. 4. That Mr. Shanahan’s request for a month’s pay tor each year of service cannot bo recommended for the favorable consideration of tiro Council. 5. That the time for reception of tenders for the removal of niglitsoil and rubbish Ims been extended n fortnight. 0. That Mr Miller’s further claim of £2OO for laud taken tor extension of Taranaki-stroot. is referred for the co.isi deration of the whole Council. It was stated that a portion of Councillor Miller's land had been tahen in mistake. Councillor Young, to test the fooling of the Council, proposed that £IOO be voted to Mr. Miller. . Councillor AIMIN’ seconded this motion. Councillor Logan thought the Council would bo treating Councillor Miller very fairly by voting £IOO. ~ The Match thought tho Council would act wiser by settling the matter by arbitration. Councillor Greenfield moved as an amendment that £l6O lie paid. Councillor. Maginnity would lute to seo the matter settled by arbitration. Ho objected to persons mailing such a claim to the Council. Ho remarked that Councillor Miller did not give more than £’2oo tor the whole of the The Mayor again urged that the question should he settled by arbitration. Councillor Young insisted on having his motion put to tho Council, Councillor Thompson moved as a further amendment that the matter ho referred to arbitration.
