CITY COUNCIL.

We are compelled to abridge ear report of the City Council last night. There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Young, Dixon, Thompson, Allan, Logan, Miller, Maginnity, Greenfield.—A telegram was received from Hr. Clark, recommending that if Mr. Crawford’s land could not be obtained for £15,000, the sewer should be taken to Cook’s Strait, the matter being first purified. Theieport was referred to the Drainage Committee.—The report of the Public Works Committee was read and adopted.—The alterations in Willis-street were agreed to by 5 to 2, Councillors Young and Maginnity being the only dissentients.—The following tenders were accepted :— Kerbing Sussex-square, P. Scully, £593 ; block crossing, Cuba and Sydney strrets, John Jay, £155 ; channelling and kerbing Lainbtou-quay, J.Saunders, £7 17s sd; formation Nelson-street, C. MoKirdy, per chain £l4 19s. 6d.; alterations in Willis-street, P. Scally, £940 ; Dixon-street, J. McLean, 4952 10s.

Councillor Logan moved, —That the Hackney Carriage By-Laws be amended as under ; —That their jurisdiction do not extend beyond the boundaries of the city, except Queen’s Wharf. That there be only one class of licenses, viz., cabs; borough stage carriages not to be recognised. That the license fee be 20s. per annum, or 2s. per month to end of licensing term. That the check bell be done away with. That the badge be dispensed with. That the painting of the number on lamp glasses be dispensed with. . That clause 53, relative to carrying corpse in coffin, be struck out. That clause 57—“ Agreement for more than legal fare not binding ” —be struck out. That the fares be altered as under : —By the hour, 2 horses, 5s ; 1 horse, 4s. For every subsequent quarter-hour, 2 horses, Is. 3d. ; 1 horse, Is. • Councillor Young seconded the motions, which were carried without dissent.
