THE TRAMWAY.
TO THE EDITOR OP TUB NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I have taken a great deal of interest in the subject of street tramways, and have made it ray business to ascertain the terms on which the concession was granted to the Wellington Tramway Company to enable them to occupy tho streets of the city. In watching the operations of the company I see that in several important directions it is not complying with the terms of its concession, and it is a matter of surprise to me that the officers of the Corporation do not insist upon these conditions being adhered to, the more so as the continued infringement of them will, I fear, lead sooner or later to serious accidents. The maximum speed at which the trams were to run anywhere in the city was ten miles per hour. Now, is it not a fact that they run constantly at the rate of over fifteen miles per hour ? In Willis-streofc and Manners-street the maximum speed was fixed at four miles per hour. A speed of ten miles per hour is frequently attained in these narrow streets, and I have seen at both turning' points in Willisstreet tho trams go round the corners at such a speed as ; has rendered it, very difficult for both pedestrians and vehicles to get out of the way. I am not aware whether there is any limit fixed to the number of passengers that the, company are allowed to carry in the carriages, but that they are often much overcrowded must be patent to all who use them. ■ I write In no spirit of hostility to the Tramway Company, but with the view of calling the attention of the proper authorities to the subject before it is too late.—l am, &c., Viator.
