THE NEW NATIVE POLICY.
to; THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir,—Being in the habit of visiting at times various parts of the country on business, and taking great interest in its progress, especially in regard to native titles, which, for various causes well known to those now iu power, are in a very unsettled state in some districts, X would*make the'following enquiries, not being able to obtain trustworthy information elsewhere, Is the case known as the Omarunui dispute at Hawke's Bay settled ? Some two years back, it will be remembered, this laud was decided by the Supreme Court at Napier, and subsequently by the Court of Appeal at Wellington, to belong to the European purchaser; but the natives, it is said by the advice of the present Native Minister, then the reputed legal adviser to the party known as the 4< Repudiation Party, 1 ' d fled the law, insulted the Registrar of the Court, and held possession of the land; and, I am informed, continue so to hold it to* the present day. Is this the case? It is to be h**ped not. 2nd. It is rumoured that the Resident Magistrate at Wairoa, who has zealously done his duty for the past eight or ten years, has been suddenly dismissed at less than a month’s notice, the only reason given for such a course on the part of the Government being that he is a relative of an obnoxious member of the H>*use of Representatives; and further, that the office has been at once filled by appointing the editor ot the local paper, which is ostensibly the property of one of the staunchest supporters of the present Government. There are a few more queries I should like to make, but fear giving too much trouble. —I am, &c., Enquires.
