DUNTROON RACES.
Oamaru, Thursday. The Duntroon races commenced to day. The attendance was large, and the weather fine in the morning, but it became cold in the afternoon, and towards the close of the last race rain fell. Maiden Plate, 30 sovs., weight for age.— Thomson’s b.h. Endymion, 4 yrs., Ist; Campbell’s oh.g. Duntroon, aged, 2nd; Goedman’s c. Maligner, 3 yrs., 3rd. Minnie, Pukeaura, Maid of Honor, Maid of Waitaki, and Chillington also ran. Shillelagh was scratched. After several false starts, the horses went off at a good pace, Chillington being taken to the front, followed by Maid of Honor and Endymion. After going for a mile Duntroon began to get in front, and entering the straight led, but Endymion soon after passed him and won by some lengths ; Maligner "3rd, three lengths away. Time, 2 min. 554 sec. Waitaki County Plate Handicap, 50 sovs.; one mile and a half.—Devery’s ch g Agent, 5 yrs., 6it 121 b, Ist; Kay’s oh g Sinking Fund, 6 yrs, 7st 101 b, 2nd ;” Swanson’s g g Blue Peter, aged, 7st 101 b, 3rd. Exile also started. Betting : 4 to 1 on Sinking Fund, 5 to 1 against Blue Peter, and any odds agaiut the others. After one false start,. the flag fell to a good start. Blue Peter got to the front immediately, Sinking Fund being in close attendance on him, Agent third. The fir-t time past the stand Blue Peter' bad a clear lead of two lengths, Sinking Fund and Agent racing side by side, and Exile being outpaced. When a mile had been traversed Sinking Fund got on level terms- with Peter, who immediately showed the white feather. Agent then began to gain on Sinking Fund, and they entered the straight together; Agent had Sinking Fund beaten soon after, and won by three lengths ; Peter a bad third ; time, 2min. 40sec. Waitaki Cup Handicap, of 150 sovs., with a sweep of 2 sovs.; distance, two miles.—Ray's b m Maritana, aged, Bst lib,lst; Hill’s b g Unknown,' aged, 7st, 2nd ; Neilsou’s oh g Te Whetu, 7st 51b, 3rd. Goodman's brown horse Chancellor, 4yrs, 7st., also ran.- Betting : 2 to 1 on Maritana ; 3 and 4 to 1 against the others. The horses wore despatched to a good start, and raced together for a quarter of a mile, when Maritana assumed the lead, Chancellor being second, Unknown third, and To Whetu fourth. '.This order was maintained for half a mile, when Maritana increased the lead by three lengths, and from thence the game little mare was never asked to stretch her neck, for although Unknown responded bravely when punished, he could never get near her, and she won hands down by three lengths, Te Whetu a good third, and Chancellor nowhere. Time, 3min. 45sec. The Handicap Trotting Race, 25 sovs., throe miles, was won easily by Charlie, Little Nell being second. Hack Selling.
