RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Monday, September 30. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., 8.M.) VAGRANCY. Hannah Mendoza, a woman well known to tbe police, was charged with vagrancy at the Hutt. Prisoner was sentenced to- one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor, and cautioned not to appear again before the Court. ASSAULT. Joseph Thompson was charged by Michael Scanlon with assaulting him on the 29th inst. Plaintiff deposed that the accused hit him on the arm with a bottle. On the night previous accused was drunk, and took a razor to cut his throat. The case was adjourned until next day for the production of additional evidence. LARCENY.
Selina Smith, aged fourteen, was charged with sterling a pair of earrings of the value of 30s.
Sergeant Smith asked for a remand, as lie was not prepared to proceed with the case. His Worship said he would not object to a remand if some special arrangement could be made whereby the girl would be kept apart from the other prisoners in the gaol, but he would not remand her if she had to associate with old criminals. Sergeant Smith replied that he would communicate with the gaoler, and have the girl kept separate from the other prisoners. His Worship then remanded the prisoner for a week, DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. William Clarke . was charged with wilfully damaging a door and window of a house occupied by Kon Quay. On the application of the accused the case was remanded until to-day. CIVIL CASES. Wilson v. Stevens, claim £4 11s., for clothes made and delivered to the order of defendant, a captain of a cadet corps. The case was adjourned for a week for the production of fresh evidence. In the following cases judgments, were given for the plaintiffs.:—Simonds v. Russell, claim £5 ; W. Skelly v. G. Stevens, claim £0 11s. j T. Kay v. G. King, claim £3 Bs.; G. Fitzmaurice v. P. Mclntyre, claim £5, amount of a dishonored cheque. The cheque was dated on August 14, which was a Sunday, on account, in payment for twenty-one years’ lease of a section of land at the Lower Hutt. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed and costs. Mr. Ollivier appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr, Fitzherbert for the defendant. Beattie v. Bruce, claim £5 10e. Cd., for board, refreshment, washing, and lodging. .‘Defendant denied that be owed for nineteen pints of beer as mentioned in the bill of particulars, and also Is. for washing. Judgment was .given for the plaintiff for'£s Is. Same v. Chmion, claim £8 Bs. 6d.; judgment for £6 Bs. Cd. Same v. Bruce, claim £5 10 s.; judgment for £5 Is. Same v. S. Pollen, claim £lO Is. od.; judgment for £7 6s. 3d.
