NARROW ESCAPE FROM FIRE.
TO THE EDITOR OK THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir,—l have the misfortune to live near the Phoenix Foundry, in Old Custom House-street, the chimney of which establishment frequently emits sparks, which fall on to the adjoining houses, and occasionally into them when the windows are* open. Yesterday my bedroom window was left partly open for a short time, for the purpose of letting in a little fresh air, when some sparks were blown on to the bed, and burnt a tolerably large hole in the counterpane, and had not the- occurrence been observed almost immediately the room would probably have been in a blaze in a few minutes. This is not the first time that houses in the neighborhood of this foundry have been iu imminent danger from the same cause ; and as this may be considered a public matter, for the whole town, or a large part of it, might bo set on fire in this manner, I hope you will find space to call attention to the nuisance and danger complained of.—l ara, &c.,
A Dweller near the Foundry, Wellington, October 1.
