GOLDSBIiOUCH'S MONTHLY ' CIRCULAR.
Messrs.' It. Goldsbrjugh and Co. in their monthly circular dated Melbourne, September 2, report as I Hows:— ■■"'... , ; WOOL. As usual at this dull season of the year, there is :scarcely any business doing, but active operations will soon bi resumed, a 3 wo have already received*tho first instalments of some large Jtiverine clips and hare advices of several other lots being on the way. Tho-wool is generally well grown and sound, and we bel eve will bo found in excellent condition, owing to the spl ndid season. We alludo more especially to the Klverine clips and thos • from this colony, as some of- the n rthe'ra districts havo net been favored with sufficient rain as yet, and tho wool will probably bo - scarcely up to the average. ' The reports received by cable announcing tho opening of the 'August sales at Arm prices have given much satisfaction, and there wjll evidently bo a pros- : perous year; with plenty of competition in the colony for all the wool that can be offered. Last season, ! ,123,000 bales were sold here, and, from the increasing fiopularity of this marked it is reasonable to expect a 3rge increase in the sales this coming season. The opening sales will probably commence the first week in October—perhaps earlier. The first show of tho Australian Shecp'Drcedcrs' Association was held at our warehouses on tho 27th u!t.,and the sheep brought forward for competition far exceeded any previous exhibition in theio colonies; indeed, wo question if sueh magnlllccnt merinos can be produced in any other country in tho world. The animals) were most perfect types, and it is difficult to believe that they can bo surpassed for svinmelry of form, weight of iieeco. and quality of wool. The Messrs. Cuiaming, of Mount Fyans, Stony Poiut, and ■ Terinalluin estates, were In the front rank, and took several of the champion prizes, including those for tho champion ram and champion owe. Kor the benefit of breeders at a distance who are not here to see the sheep wo give the brands of Messrs. Cumming's wool, which are as follows .--Mount Fyans, TKC, and IX! over T; and the HI3II prices realised for these clips at tho .London sil-s show bow much tlioy are appreciated by manufacturers. lint they wore closely followed by Klr.Hainnel Wilton, .f. X. Currie, Thomas Bowling j and-Son, K a. ((reeves, Ar Kuidianan, and other n ted nock-masters. The show of long Wools was also very good, proving that our climate, is also eminently suited .for the Lincoln, Leicester, iind other Englltli breeds. : But wo aro convinced that in no other country can the Australian merinos bo excelled ; ami f the skill and Judgment displayed in bringing forward ..such »nlmals cannot bo too highly commended. Australia has In ibis exhibition fairly vindicated her claim 10 be the head-quarters of tho merino ; and the Rurou.-'iin and American breeders will do well to tows tiete lor sheep to Impiovo tln-iv nocks,

SHEEPSKIN*. Swing the month we have sold a full supply of both dry anil green skins at highly satisfactory prices, the tone of the market being veiy firm. Tlio local scourers have taken the, bulk of. the lots .offered at the following quotations:—BHtchera'green skins, 4s. to 7s each; dry skins, as to 5s Cd each ; station skins, 3d to 7d per lb, according to condition and length of staple. -■: ~ .', ' ~! ' . ' HIDES. This market continues to be depressed, and we experience great difficulty in effeotlng sales even at the , comparatively reduced quotations. The .quality, sent forward is leas than usual, aud consists almost entirely of town slaughtered, tho shipments from the other colonies being much reduced, owing to the low rates ruling. We quote:—Ox hides, average sizes, 17s to 23s each : cow hides, lis to 10s each; Victorian salted, 2}d to S|d per lb ; New Zealand salted, nominally, 3Jd to ltd per lb. KANOABOO SKINS. The tone of this market is slightly better than it has been for some months, and there is a fair demand for skins in good condition, largo sizes being particularly inquired for. (We have sold a few picked parcels at 7d to 8d per lb; ordinary sorts, at id to (id per lb. - TALLOW. Wo have sold by publlo auction and privato contract 641) casks since our last circular, and are glad to note that the market continues steady at la'o quotations. A fair quantity has been bought for shipment, but the bulk has been taken for local requirements. All offering can bo readily plaqed at quotations:— Mutton, £3l 15s to £33 per ton f.o.b. ; beef, £3olos to £32 do; mixed, £2U to £3l do. The rate of freight to London is £2 per ton. The only shipment of tallow to London is 829 casks per Loch Sunart; the-lond'on WOOL makket. , .■■ .London, 2nd August, 1878. Messrs. Sanderson, Murray, and Co. report as follows ;—Since the close of tho last sales only a few transactions have taken place privately, but tho business done has been at prices fully o iual to tho bwt obtained in the last sale. There appears to be some movement in the woollen trade, and this, coupled with the result of the Berlin Congress and ttib prospect of a good grain harvest, will, we trust, make prices very firm in the sales to open .on the 20th instant. The recent sales at Antwerp havo passed off with good splrifcat an advance of 5 to 10 per cent, on May rates. All wools arriving up to 4 o'clock on the opening da. of the sales will bo admitted, aud it is expected that, excluding wools sent forward to manufacturers, and including4o,ooo bales held over, about 330,000 bales will be availabio for the next series. Tho arrivals t> date are as follows:—New" South Wales, 53,7?!> bales : Victoria, 02,702 do ; South Australia, 17.200 do ; Western Amtralla, 70D do ; Tasmania. 030!) do; New Zealand. 83,227 do; Cape of Good Hope, 49.053.
