WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held yesterday. Present—The Chief Commissioner, and Messrs. Pearce, Walter Johnston, and Mason. LAND SALES. The .land sales since the last meeting of the Board were reported as being 19A acres, and the receipts £6O 15s. APPLICATION FOR LAND. A letter was read from the chairman of the Palmerston school committee asking for the transfer of two acres of land to them. The Chairman said that the Board had no power to transfer the-sections. It was resolved that the Board could not accede to the request. DEPUTATION. Mr. Wallace, Dr. Bailer, and Mr. Dransfield waited on the Board as a deputation in reference to a resolution passed by the Board on the 27th June. The following is the resolution :—" Resolved—That the survey of the town of Huuterville in the Paraekaretu Block be immediately, proceeded with, and that the Government bo requested to place upon the Estimates the sum of £SOOO as a grant in aid towards the cost of constructing a road from Major Marshall’s to the site reserved by the Government for the township.” Mr. Wallace said that he had waited on the Hon. Mr. Ballance, who had told him that he had not seen the resolution. He (Mr. Wallace) had obtained a copy of the resolution, and had shown it to Mr. Ballance, and was then advised to see the Hon. Mr. Stout. He subsequently saw that gentleman, and was informed that the sum had not been placed on the Estimates, and that he (Mr. Stout) thought it was rather too late to have it placed upon them for this year. Mr. Wallace then suggested that another resolution should be passed by the Waste Lands Board, asking the Government to have the sum placed on the supplementary estimates. He urged upon the Board the desirability of doing so, as the County Council could not of themselves find sufficient funds to make the road ; aud he thought it was the duty of the Government to do so.’ Dr. Bdller said that the owners of the land in the district would be quite willing to be rated.

The Chairman of the Board suggested that a list of those owning land and willing to be rated should be made out.

Dr. Bulli'-K said that it would have to -operate on all owners alike—it would be unfair if it were not so. He was sure Mr. Ballance would take the initiative if the Board would agree. . , .

The Chairman pointed out that the making of the road rested entirely with the County Council or the Highway Board.

Mr. Wallace said there was a Government township at Huntervilie, and he believed the the survey of that township was now going on. Mr. Duansfield explained that the object the deputation had in waiting on the Board was to, show that the Government were in reality not aware of the resolution passed by the Board, and the deputation now asked the Board to pass another resolution and place it before the Government, so that the sum. for the formation of the road might he placed on the supplementary estimates. . The township has considerably increased the value of land in the vicinity, and he as one of the owners of laud was of opinion that the Government should help them. Mr. Pearce explained that it was no fault of the Board that the Government were-not aware of the resolution, as a copy of it had been sent to the Government twice, once on 27th June, and again on Bth August. Mr. Wallace suggested that the Board should inform the Government that the township was being surveyed.

The Chairman stated that he believed the survey was nearly completed, but he oonld say nothing definite about it until he had received the block map from the surveyors. Dr. Bugler said that there waa, no blame attached to any one, as the resolution had gone astray.

The Chairman thought that Mr. Stout was not in office at the time that the resolution was passed, and suggested it was quite competent for the Board to bring the matter under the notice of the Government.

It was resolved that a copy of the resolution of June 27 should be forwarded to the Government.

The deputation then thanked the Beard, and withdrew.

This was ail the business, and the Board adjourned. ’ , ,
