(FROM A* COURESPONDENT.) Masterton, . Friday. The [municipal elections yesterday caused plenty of excitement. There were five candidates for honors—Messrs. F. Gray, A. W. Renall, 0. E. Gapper, H. Bentley, and 0. Wilton. The first three were elected in the order named. (mi mass* AGENCY.) Napier, Friday. Headley and Ryan report , the sale of Mr. Fred. Moore’s Homewood property, near Whareama, Castle-point, consisting of 2-100 acres freehold aud 1900 acres leasehold, with 250 sheep and 100 head of cattle, the whole for £6500, to Mr. F. 13. Tatham, of Poverty Bay. , Gisborne, Friday. The Waiapu murder case is creating much interest here. • The coroner’s inquest commenced yesterday. Mr. 13. F. Ward is retained for the defence of the prisoners, and from the evidence it wrtuld appear that the only crime proved will bo that of.manslaughter. The native prisoner Peiienvm, who was charged with rape, is now to be arraigned on the charge of murder. The Court sat till late last night, being delajed by one of the witnesses fainting under cross-examination. The case will probably last a week. Auckland, .Friday. At a meeting of volunteers it was resolved to support the proposal for a National. Riflo Association. Mr, Robert Fcclcs, a passenger by the Lady Jocelyn, was fined £25 aud had his property ; forfeited, for smuggling eighteen watches ami thirty razors ashore. BUhop Sblwyn, of Melanesia, first heard of his father’s death casually from a trader to the islands. Ho left for Sydney by the first opportunity, aud thence goes to Norfolk Island, coming on to Auckland cu route for England. Dunedin, Friday. Seven candidates intend presenting themselves at the half-yearly examination under the Law Practitioners Act on Monday next, Guahamstown, Friday. A body was picked up uaar Coromandel to-day. It is believed to be one of those lost iu the fishing boat Colombo. The widow of the missing man named Thrupp goes to Coromandel to view tho.body, nt the request of thp police. It is said one of the candidates returned yesterday to be disqualified from sitting in the Council bn the ground of an alteration in the amount of his assessment after the roll had been certified. Christchurch, Friday. The City Council feel very indignant because of the election of Hr. WILon. . There is-
some talk- of their resigning in a body. In reference to Wilson’s election, it is known that there was lavish expenditure of money, and that the proceedings throng’,rout formed the noisest and rowdiest elec .iou ever held in Chris’ chore’’. Two Oouucill >rs have just sent in their resignations. The elrsing scene, when the poll was declared at 9 o’clock last night, was an utter disgrace to Christchurch. The scene at the declaration of the poll last night was one of indescribable confusion. The mob howled at the returning offioer, who could not be heard. When Gapes, who polled thirteen hundred votes, got ou to the fence to return thanks he had the honor rather taken off by some one who threw a quantity of flour in his eyes, nearly blinding him, and knocking him off the fence. Wilson, the second highest ou the poll, was carried over to the hotel by the crowd, amid cries of “ Cabbage for ever.” There is great feeling manifested at this election, and Councillors Ratclilfe, Jameson, Eudenclau, Pratt, and Bickerton have resigned rather Unit sit. at the same table. It is also said that Gapes and Ayers will resign, but this is doubtful. There will probably be a municipal block such a« was never before known here. The result is looked forward to with interest. Amongst The coming candidates are Messrs. Murphy, Peters, Lee, and Brian. The names of other candidates are mentioned as likely to contest the election.
Arguments in the case of the Avon Road Board and the Colonial Treasury concluded to-day. The Court gave judgment for the Government, both Judges concurring that a mandamus could not issue. Mr. Joynt gave notice of appeal.
