Mr. C. G. Edmiston, late purser of the Hawea, retires on arrival at Auckland. His retirement causes great regret among his friends hero. AUCKLAND, Monday. New Brunswick : brig—Jane ; brigantines—Endeavor and G, M. Colson. The Government steamer Hinemoa, from tho North, arrived here early yesterday. She left Auckland at 10 p.m. on the 21st instant, with 209 of tho Lady Jocelyn immigrants for Tauranga, and arrived there at 11 o’clock on the morning of the 22m1; landed the immiirraufs, and left again at noon next day. Called at the East Cape and Kawakawa, and arrived here as above. The steamer Jane Douglas will sail to-day for Foxton. The berths at the Breastwork were all filled up yesterday with coasters. They were all busy landing their cargo, chiefly timber. The steamers Stormblrd for Wanganui and Tui for Kaikoura and Lyttelton sailed last night. The Union Co.'s steamers Wellington and Taranaki both left yesterday. The topsail-schooner Martha Reed, from Wangapoa with a cargo of timber, arrived In harbor yesterday morning The topsail-schooner Elizabeth Curie, with a cargo of colonial produce, arrived from Lyttelton yesterday morning She experienced fine weather across. The first two ships in tho great ocean race of over ten thousand miles passed Dover on Ist July—the Glenflnlis, from Foochow, at 1.3 p.m., and the Gleneacles, from Hankow, at 1.30 p.m The last-named will be the winner. She makes the the fastest passage on record. —European Mail, THE BERTHON COLLAPSIBLE BOATS. These boats, which arc manufactured at Romsey, Hants, by a company formed for the purpose, are constructed on a principle which ensures great strength and buoyancy. The framework consists of a number of longitudinal segmental planes of the best Canadian rock elm. These are joined together at tho -tops of the stem and stern posts, and when the boat is collapsed they lie side by side. Over the web-llke skeleton skins of the stoutest oil canvas are disposed and attached in such a way as to form separate watertight compartments, the whole making an admirable lifeboat. Tho boat is collapsed in a few moments, and this is effected by taking away the seats, removing the stanchions which lock into them, and inverting the bottom of the boat. The air expelled from tho cells by the collapsing of the boat is drawn back by the bellows-like action of opening. The boats can be made in almost any size, some of those employed in the service of the Admiralty being 30 feet long by 10 feet broad, and capable of carrying 200 men. For fishb’g and shoo ing purp ses these boats are made about 7 feet by 3} feet, and when collapsed will lie in a space of 0 inches wide. Although a perfect lifeboat, the “Berthon” can be made ready for sea in less than a minute. For use in the colonies, such a boat as this is extremely us.ful. Picked up with the same ease as a portmanteau, it can bo as readily conveyed anywhere, and yet it Is a perfect lifeboat, and will live in the roughest sea. Messrs.
