(PER PRESS AGENOI'.) Auckland, Saturday. A monster reception will be given to Dr. Somerville when passing through here per Ran Francisco mail steamer. Gbahamstown, Saturday. The Mayor, in to-day’s announces his intention of going to Wellington notwithstanding the refusal of the Council to sanction the trip at the ratepayers’ expense, they having full confidence in their members doing justice to the place without lobbying, which Sir George Grey so strongly oondemed when in opposition. The body of Do Thierry, sou of old Baron De Thierry, was recovered hy some fishermen this morning. The other two bodies have not yet been found. Napier, Saturday. A reply from Lord Beaconsfield to the congratulatory telegram sent from here was received to-day as follows :—“ My colleagues and I desire to express our thanks to the people of Napier for their message.” New Plvsiouth, Saturday. The prospectus is issued of the New Plymouth Gas Company. Shares are being subscribed for liberally Blenheim, Saturday. Mr. Edmond Ecoles, secretary to the D’Urville Copper Mining Company, died at eleven o’clock last night. A footrace took place to-day for £IOO a side between Molvor and Hart. Hart won. Westport, Saturday. Captain Bascand, of the Luna, reports the loss of the schooner Merlin, bound from New Plymouth to Greymouth, on the night of the 15th instant, on the south side of Stevens Island. The Public Works Department of Dunedin has received a notification that the Christchurch and Dunedin line of railway will be ready for opening on the 31st inst. St. Patrick’s Church, South Dunedin, was opened to-day by Bishop Moran. The collections amounted to £l2O. Oaiiaru, Saturday. A Conference of Hoad Boards in the County of Waitaki took place to-day, when a resolution was passed requesting that tho county council, after deducting the amount spent on county roads, instead of taking over more roads, should hand over tho surplus money to road boards in proportion to the rates raised in each riding. At a meeting of farmers, merchants, and others to-day, the following resolution was passed and ordered to be telegraphed to members representing tho district in Parliament; — That this meeting, while approving of the principles of free trade, would like to see it carried out throughout the Australian colonies, and is of opinion that as long as an import duty is imposed by any other colony upon New Zealand grain or flour it is necessary in selfdefence to impose a like duty on articles imported from such colony. Invercargill, Saturday. Tapper Brothers, merchants, Doe-street, sold their entire business to-day to Messrs. Guthie and Larnaoh’s Company for £50,000. On d!t that Mr. J. W. Mitchell is about to be appointed local manager' of tho Colonial Bank, vice Mr. Dalgleish, resigned.
