At a conference between the brewers and publicans to-day the latter agreed to forego the additional halfpenny charged on beer, the price to be Is. fid. per gallon as before, with the tax. added. It was also resolved that a delegate representing the publicans and brewers be sent to Wellington to oppose the tax. The Chamber of Commerce has received the following reply to their congratulatory telegram to Lord Beaconsfield : —“ I am honored by the receipt of the message from Auckland, and cordially thank the Chamber of Commerce.—(Signed), Beaconsfield.” The Hinemoa has sounded Katikati harbor. At the entrance it was found that there was only a depth of lift, of water. The Lady Jocelyn will therefore be towed to Tauranga, and the immigrants will bo landed there. The application from Mr. Burt, of Dunedin, to try his scheme of deodorising the city drainage, has been referred to the Public Works Committee. Patea, Wednesday. Up. to yesterday the Waimate Plains survey was proceeding satisfactorily, and not the slightest apprehension of interference by the natives, though a few Europeans, riled at their prognostications of evil not having proved true, are said to have given false reports as to the intentions of the Government, by asserting that fighting was intended. These reports were spread on the plains by a few dissatisfied natives, but with no avail, and the work is proceeding. Wanganui, Wednesday. A young man named Prank Martin was killed at the railway station at noon to-day, while shunting some goods carriages. The deceased, who was a porter, ran in between two timber trucks to couple them, but timber projecting over tho trucks caught him, and his chest and back were crushed, death being almost instantaneous.
Christchurch, Wednesday. Tho Government land sales on Monday and Tuesday realised over £SOOO, The benefit to Mr. W. Hoskins, in honor of his forty-first professional anniversary, took place at the Theatre Loyal last night. It was a grand success. There was a large and brilliant audience. Mr, /Hoskins received a perfect ovation, and during the intervals was presented by Sir Oracroft Wilson with a cheque for £2OO, raised by public subscription and by members of the theatrical company, and a gold chronograph watch, costing sixty guineas. Dunedin, Wednesday. The receipts of the Dunedin Jockey Club for theseasonlß77-S amounted to £5291 9s. 4d., and expenditure £6577 Bs. 2d. The balance of assets over liabilities is £2033 10s. 2d. Further additions to the grand-stand have been made, including eight loose boxes and cottage for park-keeper, at a c»st of about £720. A. H. Jack, manager of the National Insurance Company, was entertained at luncheon yesterday by the directors. He proceeds to San Francisco with the view of opening a branch there should sufficient inducement offer. A series of entertainments will be given in the Queen’s Theatre next week in aid of the Benevolent Institution. The Secretary for Grown Lands, Wellington, has written to the Chief Commissioner of the Otago Waste Lands Board, stating that it would meet with approval of Government if tho Board would, wherever it is deemed necessary, consider two or three contiguous sections as one allotment, so long as the aggregate area does not exceed 320 acres in rural lands and 20 acres of suburban land. The Waste Lands Board to-day, without discussion, granted leave of absence to Messrs. Thomson, Green, and Bastings during the session.
