(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Masterton, Monday. It has been ascertained that the name of the man drowned in the Ruamahunga a few days ago was nob Hawkins, hut William Henry Rocking. Deceased was a native of Redruth, Cornwall, Auckland, Monday. A fire broke out in Cross-street, Newton, this morning, destroying a two-storey house the property of J, C. King. It was insured in the Standard office for £2OO, and purchased twelve months ago at £330. It was empty at the time. Nothing as to the origin of the Sre was discovered. The steamer Geelong, on her way to Hokianga from Whaugape, was caught in a storm, and lost a raft of 50,000 feet of kauri timber which she was towing. The loss is £4OO. Grahamstown, Monday. Mr. Rswe, M.H.R. for the Thames, and County Chairman, leaves for Wellington on Thursday. The Hon. Mr. Naha will be engaged at the Lands Court for the next fortnight. A travelling professor of medicine, largely advertised in New Zealand, was detected eloping with a barmaid early this morning. The damsel is iu her teens, while the professor, who halls from. America, is quite fifty, and has a wife in Auckland. New Plymouth, Monday. A meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club was held on Saturday, when it was resolved that the races should be held on the sth and 6th December. - « Christchurch, Monday. ; The re-opening and blessing of the Catholic Church of the Moat Blessed Sacraraeat, to which large additions have been recently made, took place yesterday. There was a crowded congregation, High Mass was conducted by Bishop Redwood, and the sermon was preached by Father Hennebery. The Canterbury Cricket Association have resolved to send an eleven to Melbourne next season, and have decided to challenge the following clubs Melbourne, East Melbourne, South Melbourne, and Ballarat. The Bohemian and Richmond clubs have also decided to invite the English team of gentleman players to visit Christchurch. Timaru, Monday. F, Fynmore, late captain in the Royal Marine Artillery, was found drowned iu Saltwater Creek, near Timaru, this afternoon. An inquest will be held to-morrow, A gold watch and chain, valued at 30 guineas, have been presented to Captain Mills, harbor-master, by the New Zealand Insurance Company, in recognition of services rendered by him to the company. Father Hennebery opens his mission here next Sunday, Bishop Redwood accompanies him.
Efforts will be made to open the Mechanics’ Institute reading-room on Sunday afternoons, Dunedin, Monday.
It is stated that Mr. Ross intends to petition against Mr. Driver’s return for Roslyn, on the ground of bribery and corruption. At the official declaration of the poll to-day be said if the electors had been left to vote as they pleased Mr. Driver would not have been returned. Mr. Driver replied that this statement was an insult to the 335 electors who voted for him. Mr. Boss said be would have insulted them had he kept public-houses open for their convenience. Mr. Driver replied, “It is a lie.” Other personalities were also indulged in. A telegram has been received from Government re the site of the goods station, that they cannot act contrary to the opinion of Sir John Goode. Should Government persist in adopting Mr. Macandreiv’s plan, the local representative bodies will probably appeal to Parliament. ,
