MASSACRE IN NEW CALEDONIA.

The City of Melbourne, -from Noumea, brings news of a terrible revolt of the native' in the interior of New Caledonia, about 9' miles from Noumea. Up to the time of th<vessel leaving the bodies of 85 victims were found, terribly cut and hacked. The majority of these victims are French colonists. The friendly natives are helping the gensdarmes to suppress the revolt. Colonel Passebnre, com manding the forces, who went against the insurgents with a detachment of troops, wa. wounded, and died within two hours. The news of the rising in New Caledonia ho* been confirmed. Two tribes numbering 100*' have never acknowledged the French autln rity. Tho troops and-armed colonists hav surrounded them completely, and it is .e> - pected they will be exterminated. The cannot the rising is attributed to harsh treatment of the natives by the whites.
