Auckland, Friday. Sotbern appears here shortly. The volunteers met last evening, and passed resolutions appointing trustees of the volunteer hall and rifle r«nge. TTnur . lodge* - wor« -v«pr«aouted, numbering 250 persons, who marched through Queen-street, with banners flying, to the Protestant Hall, Newtown, and thence to Newmarket, headed by two bauds. Three hundred more then joined the procession, and marched through Parnell, and then through other thoroughfares to Beresford-street Church, where Divine service was held. Representatives were present from the principal country districts. A soiree and public meeting will he held at the Choral Hall to-night. A committee inquiry re the cases of desertion, from the Industrial Home was held to-day. h'our boys were examined. Three said they were not hard-worked, and had nothing to complain of. The other made some trifling complaints. Mr. Swanson, M. H. 8., stated that he saw one boy who appeared ailing, and asked what was the matter, to which the master replied, " He won’t trouble us long; he’s off to Kingdom come,” The Education Board to-day entered £SOO on the estimates for country libraries. Napiek, Friday. At the inspection of the artillery volunteers to-nigbt, Major Withers read a telegram he had received from Wellington, directing him to proceed to Auckland to take command of the Auckland and Thames Volunteer Districts.
Alastekton, Friday. The ratepayers in the northern portion of the County of Wairarapa West are signing a requisition to the County Council to bring the Act into full operation,'and should that request not be complied with, will petition for separation and annexation -to tho County of 'Vairarapa East, the working of the Council for which is giving general satisfaction. The immediate cause of this action is that the Government promised the members for the district to hand over the vote of £6OOO for the Opaki-Ruamahunga bridge, provided the whole Act is taken up. A meeting to consider the advisability' of dividing the" borough into wards was held last night. It was called by non-ratepayers. The speeches of the promoters were full of recrimination and abuse of the Couucil. A resolution favoring the division was carried by a majority of two. The proceedings being illegal the Mayor has called a fresh meeting. It is reported that several cases of ely-grog selling at Mauriceville are down for hearing at the next sitting of the llesident Magistrate’s Court. : Wanganui, Friday. In a drunken brawl at Wayerley on Wednesday night a Scandinavian was stabbed by a countryman four times. The wounded man is expected to die. Kumaha, Friday. An inquiry was held to-day re Stanton’s fire before the Resident Alagistrate. The jury •numbered fourteen. Three witnesses were called, and thexamination lasted three hours. The jury returned a verdict that the origin of the fire was unknown. Christchurch, Friday. A football match, North v. South Canterbury, came off to-day. After two hours’ splendid play the match was won by North Canterbury by one touch-down to nothing. At the Drainage Board to-day it was resolved to have plans prepared with a view to proceeding with permanent works according to Air. Clark’s plan. Dunedin, Friday. ■' AH. J. C. Brownaddressed his constituents last night, and received a vote of thanks at tho conclusion of his speech. At one of the principal polling booths at Taieri yesterday tho Returning Officer locked the door and went for his dinner. In consequence some electors were unable to gain admittance to the polling booth. . Air. Strode has resigned the Commissionership of the Waste Lands Bpard. The vacancy has been offered to Air. Donald Reid, but declined.
