At Newcastle,'Waikato, Mr. Whitaker, jun., emphatically declared himself a supporter of the Grey Ministry so long as they continue their present progressive policy. The Rev. Mr. Edgar has resigned the office of Grand Worthy Chief Templar of . the North Island. In banco to-day, Judge Gillies, in the will case Pierce and another v. Chisholm, ruled that trusts for twenty-five years under a will were bad, being against the rule of law relating to perpetuities, and Thellnssou’s Act; therefore they must' be set aside. The direction to lease real estate for the same period must fall with other trusts. The estate must be declared intestate, subject to certain accumulations, which must be equally divided between the testator's children, and the corpus, as intestacy, must be divided according to law.
An application was made for an appeal against the decision of the Resident -Magistrate in a case in which a farmer named Jolly was fined, under information by Mr. Lewis, sheep inspector, for having one scabby sheep in a flock of sixty-five. The counsel argued that the inspector only examined one sheep, and defendant -had no knowledge of the infection. The Judge ruled that where one sheep was scabby it must be assumed that all were scabby. The owner was bound to have knowledge of the fact. The application was dismissed. At the local annual meeting of the New Zealand Mercantile Loan Agency Company, the chairman referred to the farther issue of £40,000 worth of shares. It was intended to place further borrowing powers in the hands of the company. The development of their business rendered an increase of capital necessary, and the settlement of the waste lauds opens up a wide area for investmont. The wool, grain, and other produce consignments to the company showed a large increase. Messrs. Browning and Stone were re-elected directors. The statement that the Government has determined to carry out the coastal route of the Kaipara railway extension, instead of the inland route, excites comment. Napier, Wednesday. Mr. M. R. Miller reports .the sale of Colonel Lambert's freehold estate, at Lambert Ford, Ruataniwha, 7100 acres and 6000 sheep, all cattle, horses, aud plant, to Messrs Gillingham and Sons, of Lambrook, South Canterbury, for £30,600, Twelve months ago Colonel Lambert wanted £21,000 for the estate, but no one would give that sum. Eighteen months ago the property was valued at £IB,OOO. An action for libel is about to be brought against the Hamids Bay Herald by Mr. Hugh McLean, about when a letter appeared iu the Herald some months ago, referring in a sarcastic manner to Mr. McLean dealing with the property. McLean admits that there was no malice ou the part of the Herald, but the letter has been destroyed, and the writer is unknown. ■ *
Christchurch, Wednesday. Further particulars regarding the murder at Oxford show that the deceased woman had excited her husband’s jealousy by being too friendly with a man named Barrett, who lodged with them. Hoff complains of her infidelity, and his wife was very notorious in the Oxford district. Barrett left the house early on the morning of the murder, but whether any quarrel occurred prior to it no one knows. Hoff is about sixty years of age, and latterly has been-much given to drink. The sale of the Linwood estate of 52 acres, one mile from Christchurch, took place yesterTho land was divided intq quarter-acre sections, and realised £18,432. Three years ago Mr. Brittan, the present owner, purchased a large piortion pf the property at .-EiO p?dr acre.
Hokitika, Wednesday, ' Educational matters have been in a very unsettled condition here lately, as the Board is short of funds, salaries are overdue, and several contracts for buildings are unsettled. The Board has had a large district to the north added to the original district, necessitating, considerable additional expenditure. A deputation was despatched to Wellington last week, to interview the Minister of Education on the subject, and the result is anxiously waited for. OamaßU, Wednesday. The North Otago Coursing Club Waterloo Cup Meeting was continued to-day on the Totara estate. In the first ties Mechanic beat Fly, Spring beat Ladybird, Scalding? beat Ophelia, Magic beat Lee, Cracksbot beat St. Bees, Hamlet beat Skip ; Frolic ran a bye. In the second ties Mechanic beat Spring, Scaldings beat Frolic, Magic beat Hamlet ; Crackshot ran a bye. In the third ties Mechanic beat Scaldings, Magic beat Crackshot. In the deciding course H. Prince’s brd s Magic beat P. Mason’s brd w d Mechanic, and won the stakes. The winner and runner-up are sister and brother ; they are two years old to-day ; they were born oh board ship on the passage from. Home, and are by Farrier out of Regalia. Farrier is by Oavalena, out of Carlton ; .and Regalia by Rocketer, out of Zelinantine. Zelinantine wag out of Hebe, a twin runner-up In England for the Waterloo Cup. Farrier is full brother to Berkdalo and Master Sam. At the conclusion of the programme a private match took place between G. McGavin’s St. Bees and D. O’Brien’s Swift, for £lO. St. Bees was first to show in front, and looked like a winner, but Swift got in, and won along hard course. Invercargill, Wednesday.' To-day has been observed as a public holiday, on the occasion of the opening of the VVintou-Kingston line, and the town has been nearly deserted. The nomination of candidates for the Invercargill election took place to-day. Mr. J, W. Bain and Mr. H. Feldwick were the only candidates proposed. The show of hands was in favor of the former. The Waicola estate, on the Jacobs River, has been sold to Dunedin capitalists at £4 per acre. This is approaching 100 per cent, rise in four months, and the price is now considered favorable to purchasers. - Dunedin, Wednesday. Mr. Henry Driver announces himself as a candidate for Roslyn.
