MILLER’S Office, Bull and Mouth Hotel; Private Residence, 3 Canning-terrace, Carlton-stveet, Melbourne. • Abridged from the “ Australasian Sketched ” of Ith August, 1877. “Our front cut this month is a sketch from life of one of these sAwcs—the drawing of a £2OOO sweep on the Melbourne Cup.. The process is very simple. The committee aro chosen from among the subscribers l?y ballot, and invited to meet on ascertain evening. , Our artist was one of these privileged, few. At eight o’clock, 30 subscribers having assembled, a chairman was elected, and then two scrutineers. Two thousand marbles, with the numbers cut in plain figures on them, aro handed round, in ti*ays of 100 each, to tbe members of the committee, for the purpose of being counted. This done, they are placed la a barrel. Then on plain marbles the names of the horses are written ; these are put in a smaller barrel on the table in front of the chairman. A volunteer is callcd for to ‘chum’ the larger barrel, and slips of paper being sup? plied to the committee, everything is ready. A marble is. then drawn out of the larger barrel, ■the number called out and entered in a book, and then passed to the scrutineers. Then $ horse is drawn out of the smaller barrel, and number and horse go together; and Soon till the whole of the horses are drum. Everything is conducted with the utmost fairness, and there is no possibility ■of anything * crooked’ The affair lasted about an hour and a half," % > ■ Result slips of the drawing are forwarded to country subscribers, and the amount Is divided thus:— First ...
